"Cancer" is the second largest/most common deadly disease causing death of more number of people, next to the “Heart Disease”, which is the topper- killer of mankind.
Cancer is the name of diseases in which abnormal cells divide in a unpredictalbe and uncontrollable manner. Cancer cells will invade nearby tissues and will spread to other parts of the body through the blood-stream and lymph systems.
There are various, more than 100 types, of Cancer and they are named after the organ/ part of the body affected by cancer. For example, there are Breast Cancer, Uterine Cancer, Lung Cancer, Oral/Mouth Cancer, Stomach Cancer, Colorectal Cancer, Bones Cancer, Testicles Cancer, Skin Cancer, Immune Systems Cancer, Nervous Systems Cancer and Blood Cancer or Leukemia, etc.
Carcinoma or Skin Cancer is cancer that begins in the skin or in tissues that line or cover internal organs.
Sarcoma or Bones Cancer is the cancer that begins in bone, cartilage, fat, muscle, blood vessels, or other connective or supportive tissues.
Leukemia or Blood Cancer is the cancer that starts in blood-forming tissue such as the bone marrow, and causes large numbers of abnormal blood cells to be produced and enter the blood stream.
Lymphoma and multiple myeloma are cancers that begin in the cells of the immune system.
Central nervous system cancers are cancers that begin in the tissues of the brain and spinal cord.
Testicles Cancer is cancer affecting testicles of men, which may affect anyone or both the testicles.
Though Cancer is a disease associated with abnormal and uncontrollable growth of cells of the human body, which will spread without any boundary, unfortunately, there are no explicit symptoms for any type of cancer, except for a few types. However, there are known causes and risk factors for each type of cancer.
We must try to get a signal or warning from the risk factors and try to reduce the risk factors and detect cancer of any kind at the initial or early stage and get treatment and get cured from the deadly disease.
Cancer is definitely NOT “INCURABLE”, if detected and treated for in the initial stage.
Can we prevent the deadly disease Cancer? No. ! In most of the types of Cancer prevention is not possible, except a few such as Lung Cancer. But we can avoid the disease by reducing the risk factors related to various types of cancer.
The common risk factors for cancer of various types are:-
- Growing Older/Age
- Use of Tobacco,/smoking and non-smoking
- Exposure to Sunlight
- Ionizing radiation
- Certain chemicals and other substances
- Some viruses and bacteria
- Certain hormones
- Family history of cancer/ genetic /Inherited/ having to do with information that is passed from parents to offspring through genes in sperm and egg cells
- Excessive use of Alcohol
- Poor diet
- Lack of physical activity
- Obesity or being overweight
Many of the above Risk Factors can be avoided. Some factors, such as Family History, cannot be avoided. You can protect yourselves by staying away from known/avoidable risk factors to the extent possible.
In course of time, several risk factors may act together to cause normal cells to become cancerous. While talking about the risk of getting cancer, the following points are to be kept in mind:-
In course of time, several risk factors may act together to cause normal cells to become cancerous. While talking about the risk of getting cancer, the following points are to be kept in mind:-
- Not every Risk Factor causes cancer
- Cancer is not caused by an injury, such as a bump or bruise
- Cancer is not contagious
- Although being infected with certain viruses or bacteria may increase the risk of some types of cancer, no one will get cancer from another person
- Having one or more risk factors does not mean that one will get cancer. Most people who have risk factors never develop cancer at all
- Some people are more sensitive than others to the known Risk Factors.
