How to apply for a PAN Card?

"IT PAN CARD” is a card issued by the Income Tax Department of the Government of India to individuals for the purpose of identification in various transactions and informations. It is a plastic card with the photo of the card holder and with the number of the card or PAN number.

The IT PAN Card was issued by the Income Tax Department Offices only upto June 2003. From July 1, 2003, IT PAN Service Centres have been set up in all cities or towns where IT offices are located. In major cities there are more than one IT PAN Service Centres.

Location and other details about IT PAN Service Centres in any city can be obtained from local Income Tax Office or offices of UTI or UTIISL(a Government of India undertaking in various financial services, including IT services.)

These IT PAN Service Centres will receive PAN applications on behalf of all Assessing Officers, assist PAN applicants to correctly fill up the applications, check documents to be submitted as proof of 'identity' and 'address' by the applicant and issue acknowledgment for correct and complete applications. The IT PAN Service Centres will not accept incomplete or incorrect applications. The UTIISL has made arrangements to capture data from PAN applications and transmit it to the Income Tax Department. The Income Tax department will allot PAN and send necessary data to UTIISL where PAN card will be printed and delivered to the applicant. From October 1, 2003 IT PAN Service Centres receive and process grievances arising out of errors or requests for changes in PAN data also.

For getting “IT PAN CARD” you can get a form (Form 49 A) (cost of the form Rs5/-) and pay Rs60/- towards Service Charges and submit the duly filled in and signed form with photocopies of Identity Proof and Address Proof and two copies of recent colour photos( stamp size or passport size).

For Identity Proof photocopy of one of the following may be submitted:-
  • Passport
  • Voter’s card
  • Driving License
  • College Identity card with photo
  • Employment Identity card with photo, etc.
For Address Proof photocopy of one of the following may be submitted:-
  • Family Ration Card
  • Gas connection receipt
  • Electicity bill
  • Bank Pass book
  • Telephone bill, etc.

The applications will be collected by UTI-ISL and sent to the National Computer Centre of the Income-Tax department which will allot the numbers. The cards with new hologram and security features will be prepared by the company. The PAN NUMBER will be issued witin a week’s time and you can find it from the service center of from the website. The PAN card will be sent by post by the service center to your address within a twenty days.
