The highest Civilian Award given in the Republic of India is the "Bharat Ratna" Award.Bharat Ratna Award was instituted in the year 1954, along with the other Civilian Awards"/Padma Awards":
The "Bharat Ratna" Award is given in the form of a Gold Medal with the name of the award "Bharat Ratna" written in Devangiri Script on the front side and with the State Emblem and Motto on the reverse. The Golden Medal will be attached to a golden ribbon of width 2 inches and the ribbon with the medal will be worn around the neck of the recipient of the award.
So far 41 eminent persons have been conferred on with Bharat Ratna Award, of which 13 given posthumous.
The posthumous award given to 'Netaji' Subhash Chandra Bose was withdrawn vide Supreme Court of India orders.
Mother Teresa is a naturalised Indian to become a Bharat Ratna.
The 41 Bharat Ratna Awardees include 2 non-Indians:
Sachin Tendulkar has been showered upon with various honours at various levels in India. There is a popular demand and recommendation from many eminent Indians, including Sportsmen, for conferring upon the highest Indian Civilian Award - "The Bharat Ratna".
The Sports Ministry of India has recommended for conferring Bharat Ratna Award/Gem of India upon the "Gem of Cricket"-Sachin Tendulkar.
The Indian Government at the high levels is planning to include the 'sports' category in the specifications of awarding the Bharat Ratna Award.
We may hopefully look forward to hear the news of Sachin Tendulkar receiving the Bharat Ratna Award shortly.
Sachin Tendulkar will become the first sportsman to become "Bharat Ratna" by the Republic Day of the year 2012 that is on 26th Januaray 2012, if not by the Independence Day of this year,that is on 15th August 2011.
