‘Time’-Magazine, in its Asian Edition, has called Dr.Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister
of India as an ‘Under-Achiever’ and says thatDr.Singh appears ‘unwilling to
stick his neck out’ on reforms that will
put the country back on growth path.
Following the ‘Time’ Magazine, the US Daily- ‘Washington
Post’ has described Dr.Manmohan Singh
as a ‘Tragic Figure’.
In the Washington post, the writer Mr.Simon Denyer has said that India's
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh helped to set his country on the path to modernity,
prosperity and power, but critics say the shy, soft-spoken 79-year-old is in
danger of going down in history as a failure.
The Washington Post, in a front page story, has criticised
Dr.Singh for presiding over a deeply corrupt government.
The Post says that the
image of the scrupulously honorable, humble and intellectual technocrat has
slowly given way to a completely different one: a dithering, ineffectual
bureaucrat presiding over a deeply corrupt government.
The report refers to the continuous disruption of Parliament in the past two weeks over the coal block allocations.
According to the Washington Post:
- The story of Dr.Singh's dramatic fall from grace in his second term in office and the slow but steady tarnishing of his reputation have played out in parallel with his country's decline on his watch
- As India's economy has slowed and as its reputation for rampant corruption has reasserted itself, the idea that the country was on an inexorable road to becoming a global power has increasingly come into question
As the Washington
Post article on the allegedly poor leadership of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh
created a strong reaction in Delhi, the
US daily's Correspondent said he stood by the story and offered no
apology.
